The rooted tree

This is a transcript of a six-minute portion of Thich Nhat Hanh's discourse on mindful breathing I listened on YouTube . I find it very useful, so sharing it here. The young people who go and commit suicide... because they do not know how to handle a strong emotion. But you are much more than your emotion  —  your emotion is just a tiny part of you. Why do you have to die just because of one emotion? We have to tell the young people  —  tell them that they should not die just because of one emotion. They can learn in order to take care of one emotion. If they know how to practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, they can have enough of that energy of mindfulness and concentration in order to embrace and take care of the strong emotion. In the lying position, or in the sitting position, deep breathing generates mindfulness and concentration in order to take care of our emotion. It is very important to focus our attention on the in-breath and the out-breath, and sto...

Bipolar Disorder

It is very unfortunate that I have to title this post as "Bipolar Disorder". The reason I have to do it is because that's what the search engines understand, and most likely the words you searched for, and landed here.  Now that you are here, let's drop that label, or any such similar labels like psychosis, mania, hypomania, hypermania, depression, suicidal depression, anxiety disorder, etc., No label is going to help solve any issues, especially when it comes to mind-related situations. Why? Because the label is itself mind-made and mind cannot solve its own problems! Any such diagnosis due to mental suffering is actually a portal into spiritual awakening. How do I know this? Having been diagnosed with several of these disorders myself, I started looking for solutions on how to end the suffering the mind was causing. I found the answers in Eckhart Tolle's book " The Power of Now ". If you are reading this, I would urge you to look into this book and Ec...

Restriction

These days, we have almost unlimited career options to pursue. Most of them can be accomplished by most people. This leads us to a very difficult situation - we don't know if we are doing what we are "meant" to do. The biggest freedom we can have is accepting the fact that we don't need to know what the best occupation for us is. Yes, we need to do something to take care of the practical aspects of our lives, like food, mortgage, etc., but I don't think that's where most of us are struggling with. Most of us struggle within, wondering why we are doing what we are doing. And especially when we see someone else "succeeding" in the world, and if that someone else was seen as somehow inferior to us in the past, then we feel even worse about our own condition. What a pathetic conditioning of the mind! To get away from this unnecessary pain, the only choice we can make is to fully accept our present situation. We can even restrict ourselves to whatev...

Clarity in ways of spiritual living

As I have explored various spiritual paths, I found many suggestions or teachings that could be contradictory. This is a post to explain some of these. First, we need to understand our own life situation. Are we married? Or are we single? Or have we already left the society and living like a hermit? Or have we chosen a full-time spiritual life as a monk? All these need to be taken into account before choosing a spiritual path. What applies to a monk does not apply to people in the society. One can't argue that a monk life is better than a regular life. Each person has to choose their own path. Where a lot of spiritual teachings get confusing is when someone takes a teaching applicable to monks and tries to apply in a household, or vice-versa. As a householder i.e. as a wife or a husband, we are in a certain life situation. We need to do what's needed in that situation, like taking care of the family. Until these responsibilities are taken care of, it is not recommended...

Why write?

Welcome! I don't know why I need to write anything at all 🙂. There isn't anything new I can add to what's already written. I have written a few blogs already. Most were written thinking how they would be useful to others. Some were written completely from the ego — I have taken those down now. This time, I am writing simply because I enjoy it. This blog is almost like my online diary. The only difference is it is not private 🙂. I have taken some inspiration from the title " Commentaries on living " by Jiddu Krishnamurty . What temerity do I have to compare my writing with that of his? I don't know... just that I see the parallel between the title and what I want to write. With all that disclaimer out of the way, I will start writing now. Thank you for reading! Namasté!
